1.4418 steel is a corrosion and acid resistant, soft martensitic chrome-nickel-molybdenum steel (martensitic-austenitic-ferritic mixed structure). It exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in aggressive media.
X4CrNiMo16-5-1 is one of the better martensitic grades, showing sufficient corrosion resistance, good strength properties and high hardness with reduced carbon content. The steel has very good strength and corrosion resistance of welded joints, resistance to fatigue, very good parameters in low temperature environments, and corrosion resistance comparable to austenitic steels 18-8. In addition, it is characterized by good weldability. The grade can be used when working in low concentrations at room temperatures and typically in contact with - acetic acid, citric acid, salt solutions, pyrogallic acid, tannin, stearic acid and and some nitrates and sulfur compounds. The material supplied mainly in the form of bars is used for the production of valves, turbine subassemblies, nuts and bolts, shafts, pins, pistons, spindles, crankshafts, agitators in the chemical, energy, marine, shipbuilding, aviation/cryogenic industries.
Material 1.4418 typically provides a strong combination of good toughness values and high strength.
1.4418 can be polished and is suitable for use at temperatures between -30°C and 300°C.
It is often used for mechanically and corrosively stressed components, such as pump shafts, centrifuge parts, water turbine parts in the chemical industry, automotive and aerospace industry, shipbuilding, and mechanical engineering.
